The Philosophy of Yoga with Paul Grilley

Another interesting local event with an early registration deadline coming up very soon on October 1st. I've only had the opportunity to take one weekend workshop from Paul Grilley, but, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot that weekend. He is the author of Yin Yoga. In my opinion, what is unique about his approach is his understanding of the Chinese meridians and his application of that knowledge to his teaching of Yoga. You can find out more about Paul Grilley here:

Paul will be teaching a weekend workshop at Yoga Matrix in Willow Glen the weekend of October 10th. According to the workshop description:
A review of ancient texts, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and their context to contemporary yoga. What is Hatha Yoga? Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Kundalini Yoga? How do they differ and how are they alike? When and where did they originate? This course will explore the two ancient texts on Yoga and will trace Yoga's modern reincarnation in America as it has crossed from one culture to another.

Yoga Journal Conference in San Francisco

The second annual west coast conference is being held at the end of January 2004. I mention this now because the deadline for early registration with reduced registration fees is coming up soon on October 13th. I went to the Yoga Journal conference held in Colorado last year and it was great! Here is the online information about the upcoming San Francisco conference:

http://www.yogajournal.com/yjevents/sanfrancisco.cfm

I won't be attending the full conference in San Francisco this January, but, I couldn't stay completely away. Aadil Palkhivala, a senior Iyengar teacher, is teaching a full day intensive just prior to the start of the main conference that I am signed up for. His class that I took at the Colorado convention last year was the highlight of that entire conference for me. His intensive at the San Francisco conference is open only to teachers. The focus is on learning how to teach students to use prana to activate the different systems of the body and how to individualize the practice for each student's constitution (dosha). The longer I practice the more I find myself working with the breath. After my positive experience with Aadil last year, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to study with him again in January right here in San Francisco. You will find more information about Aadil on his web site:

New Pilates & Yoga Video by Tom McCook

Tom McCook, the founder and director of Center of Balance, has been a teacher of mine for years. He was combining Pilates and Yoga mat work in his classes long before the recent popularity of doing so. Although I have not seen his new video yet, I have personally taken classes from Tom and highly recommend him as a teacher.

This is last minute notice, but, there is a Video Release Celebration at the Center of Balance from 6:00-8:00pm this evening in Mountain View. If you would like to form your own personal impressions of Tom McCook or his center, tonight would be a good time to visit the center. Tom will be teaching a preview class of the material on the new video tonight. Unfortunately, that class is already full from advance RSVPs. You could still observe the class, meet Tom McCook, and check out the center this evening though. For further details about the event, here is the online event announcement:

Major Site Changes

It has become painfully clear that I don't have the time to maintain and update event announcements directly on this site. However, I do know about a lot of interesting Yoga events in the bay area. So, I've decided to switch the site emphasis from a calendar of events that I maintain to a web log that I will update on a regular basis. I'll no longer be posting event announcements on this site. However, I will periodically update this web log with pointers to future Yoga events that have their own online announcements.

The other sections of this site are also extremely out of date at this point. For example, Kofi Busia no longer teaches in the south bay. He is only teaching in the Santa Cruz area currently. Also, Yoga Matrix in Willow Glen is no longer strictly a Bikram Yoga studio. They offer classes in other styles of Yoga now too. Over the next few months, I am committed to updating the other sections of this site to have accurate information. Once I have done that, I will definitely make a note of it in this web log.
