When I posted earlier that Kofi Busia was going to start teaching again locally, I incorrectly mentioned that the studio involved was located in Willow Glen. Reformation Studio used to be located in Willow Glen, but, has since moved to a new location in Campbell. I just learned that this same studio is offering free classes as a community service on Saturday, November 22nd, and Sunday, November 23rd. So, check it out:

Body-Mind-Spirit Conference in Santa Clara
I just received a brochure about the Body-Mind-Spirit Conference being held from March 31 through April 4th of 2004. The venue is the Santa Clara Convention Center. It sounds interesting to me because it will have both Yoga and Pilates offerings at the conference. There will also be Gyrotonic classes, but, that is something I am not familiar with at all.
In looking through the brochure, I saw several familiar names of excellent Yoga and/or Pilates instructors. Another thing I like about it is that it appears that you can sign up for individual days of the conference at a reduced price. According to the online registration form, the currently listed registration rates are good until November 20th.

Kofi Busia
The information about Kofi Busia is still horribly out of date on this web site. He used to teach classes at Yoga Fitness in Campbell. However, he lives in the Santa Cruz area and stopped teaching at Yoga Fitness quite some time ago. Well, I just learned that Kofi will start teaching morning classes on one weekend each month at the Reformation Studio in Willow Glen. These classes won't start until January, but, that is only a few months away. An announcement about it is at the end of this workshop schedule for the Reformation Studio:
http://www.reformationstudio.com/workshops.html
You will be able to see the exact dates for the first part of next year by following the registration link that appears in the workshop schedule announcement.
So, why am I making a big deal about this. I'm not completely sure myself. Kofi is one of the most senior Iyengar teachers in this area. However, there are many other fine Iyengar teachers in this area. There is something special about his classes though. The funny thing is that I can hardly remember him ever demonstrating particular poses. It never really mattered because there were so many senior practitioners in the room that provided good visual examples. He seemed to attract the best students to his classes and they all seemed to make an extra effort in his classes. His very presence seemed to inspire everyone in the room to be the best they could be.
This is something I aspire to emulate in my own teaching someday. It is not just about communicating the nuts and bolts of proper alignment in the poses. It is also about inspiring your students to be the best people that they can possibly be.
